And if some strategies, including efforts to popul

larize winter sports in other parts of the country, succeed, people in not only Northea

st China but also in other regions could be seen playing winter sports in a few years time.

In fact, the number of people involved in winter sports has increased drastically in many cities in the

past few years. For example, Shanghai has 15 ice rinks and seven curling tracks. Southern cities such as Gu

angzhou and Shenzhen are making efforts to promote winter sports and achieved some success.

So despite the foundation of winter sports in China being weak, the general development momentum is optimistic.

In this sense, winning the bid to host the 2022 Winter Gam

es is a shot in the arm for winter sports and the winter sports industry in China.

kely to attract millions of people across Chin

to skiing, skating and other winter sports, which in turn will promote more national and int

ernational winter sports events. With the aim to better develop winter sports, governments at all levels shou

ld issue policies to encourage more people, in particular, teenagers, to follow and play winter sports.

Besides, the government should learn from the experiences of Nordic countries how to increase the popularity of winter sports.

Oh Ei Sun, a senior fellow at the Singapore Institute of Inte

“The shift toward high-quality development is a na

As the bridge was being built the price of land in

Katembe rose, and industrial parks are being planned in the region,” Wang said. “So the bridge will deliver huge economic benefits.”

The project also benefits China. For example, as Mozambique is short of construction materials and equipment, the p

roject has driven the export of more than 70,000 metric tons of steel products and equipment worth $68 million from China.

Even though CRBC was no stranger to building bridges when it took

on the Maputo-Katembe project, particular difficulties were presented by the fact that

both countries have different evaluation systems and standards of construction, Wang said.

The bridge was designed to Chinese standards but subjected to local and European standards, and the company g

ot a German engineering services provider, Gauff, to oversee the project’s quality.

President Xi’s speech emphasized on broadening China

Belt and Road Initiative and creating a global image of this initiative, so that there will

be more connectivity and more trust in this international intercontinental project.

I am from Afghanistan and we have a lot of opportunities for China’s investments. China is trying to in

vest in our railway network, which is a very promising way to create a corridor to the Central Asia. Then

Afghanistan can provide a very safe connection from China, Central Asia to the rest of the world.President Xi’s speec

h was very impressive. He spoke on opening all the economy of the world and working against protectionism. He also said

to make more efforts to give a better quality of Belt and Road Initiative to connect all the other countries. I’m very op

timistic with the progress on the Belt and Road Initiative and I hope more countries will participate in the initiative.

The news came as a surprise and has led to a number of t

of travel plan changes, as many choose new destinations a short or medi

um distance away instead of suburban trips, said Feng Rao, data research center mana

ger of Mafengwo, a major online travel service provider and tourist information-sharing platform in China.

Travel plans to Sanya, Luoyang and Enshi, three Chinese tourist cities, grew most rapidly — by 15.4

%, 13.6% and 11.6% respectively — due to the extended holiday, according to a report from Mafengwo.

With a new railway operating plan put into use from April 10 offeri

ng more high-speed train routes, high-speed train trips are easier and more convenient.

Take Luoyang in Henan province as an example. People living in Suzhou, Xuzhou an

d Jiaozuo, places where travel time to Luoyang by high-speed train is five hours or less, have turned their eyes to the city.

By now, China Railway Express (Chengdu) has linked

overseas cities and 14 Chinese cities. It has seven international railway ch

annels and five international rail-sea combined channels to further open up the city.

Six years ago, when the initiative was put forward, Chengdu opened the first direct freight railway to reach L

odz in Poland, bridging a gap to link to Europe. Through the logistics channel, the products and servic

es from Chengdu were exported to meet the demands of countries and regions involved in the initiative. It beca

me an important platform for Chinese companies to go global and for foreign capital to be introduced.

For example, China Railway Express-Skyworth Express, with 41 full containers of televisio

ns and accessories, left Chengdu International Railway Port to reach Europe in March.

The express provided a more convenient channel for Shenzhen-ba

sed television manufacturer Skyworth Group to enter overseas markets.

New plan puts greater water efficiency on tap

An action plan has been introduced to tighten water consumption as part of high-quality development moves, which aims to improve

efficiency in the use of natural resources and better protect the environment while boosting economic growth.

By 2020, water consumption per 10,000 yuan ($1,487) of GDP is expect

ed to drop by 23 percent from that in 2015, with a 20-percen
